What it usually is
Popping or rumbling usually means sediment in the tank. Screeching or ticking can be valves or heat traps. An old tank that has started making new noises is often nearing replacement.

Note the type of noise and the age on the tank label. If water is leaking, shut off the cold supply to the tank. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
