What it usually is
Common causes are dead batteries, a tripped breaker or safety switch on the furnace or air handler, or a blown low-voltage connection. A new smart thermostat is a flat rate when you supply it.
What to do first
Replace batteries if yours uses them, check the breaker for the heating system, and make sure the furnace door or panel is fully closed. Do not touch wires at the furnace.
