What it usually is
A pilot that will not stay on may be a worn thermocouple, a dirty pilot assembly, or a gas valve problem. If the tank is old, replacement may be the better value.

If you smell gas, do not relight it: leave the house and call your gas utility. Otherwise, follow the label on the tank only if you are comfortable, or call us.
